Div 5 Recap – vs FremantleA trip down south of the river ended in a tough loss for Div 5, but not without some classic Cats hustle and highlight moments.
Fremantle took the lead at the bottom of the 2nd, but we stayed in the fight. Deklan’s single to right field in the top of the 4th tied things up, only for Freo to edge ahead again in the bottom of the same inning.
Heading into the 5th trailing by one, the bats came alive. Flanno delivered a clutch single to bring in a run, followed by Ewie who smashed a double to score two more and give us the lead.
Unfortunately, the bottom of the 5th turned the game on its head. Fremantle piled on seven runs – including a 2-run homer – to take back control and close out the game.
Adam started strong in the circle, with Deklan closing it out. Both faced a string of tight (and not-so-tight) calls from the ump that didn’t go our way on either side of the ball, making it tough to build momentum at the plate.
Despite the final score, it was a solid team performance with multiple hitters stepping up and some spectacular work in the field – none more so than Beej, who took the podium with a near-horizontal, full-stretch screamer in the outfield. Danny also chipped in with a spekky of his own.
Not the result we wanted, but the Cats spirit was alive and well. Eyes forward to next week – we’ll be ready. 🐾⚾
Div 7 Black
On what turned out to be a sunny Sunday arvo the Div7 Black Cats made the short road trip to the Joondalup Outlaws very soggy home grounds.
With Robby back on the rubber for the Outlaws, the Cats plan of attack was to come out swinging with an aggressive mentality at the plate. It was a strategy that paid immediate dividends with Jono leading things off for the Cats with a ground rule double that skidded across the waterlogged outfield. The early success became a consistent theme all game long with 1-9 for the Cats swinging and making solid contact. Big hits to Deano, Aidan and Peekey paced the Cats who were smart and fast on the base paths.
On the defensive side the Cats were consistently good with both Corkhill’s
getting into the action, with great outfield snags to Alan and a fantastic put out from third by Aidan. Over at First Deano had another great game scooping a one hop throw and making an unassisted out himself. While he hasn’t quite broken in the softball catchers mit yet Nick was stellar behind the plate and sat down an attempted Outlaw steal of second by about four meters.
But the stellar Cat’s defensive performance of the game was turned in by Jono at second base who was responsible for four outs and nearly missed turning a double play. The highlight was the second inning that he completely owned making all three outs himself including a diving stop that he managed to not only glove but then get up to throw the batter out at first.
Unfortunately to their credit the Outlaws had a few fantastic defensive plays themselves that robbed hard hits from the Cats. Lady luck was also not on the Cats side with balls landing inches foul or just in gaps for the Outlaws. And while the Cats connected on Outlaw pitches all game long, the runs didn’t always follow and the Outlaws made the most of their opportunities.
While it was a much closer game than the score line, in the end the Cats just weren’t good enough going down 13-7.
Div 7 Cats Blue hosted Rocky Ora this Sunday gone for a much friendlier encounter than Div 5 had experienced the week before.
The Cats got off to a solid start holding Rocky scoreless through the first despite two errors in greasy conditions. The Cats bats then scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead before Rocky countered with some solid hitting and six runs in the top of the second innings.
With the rain now causing significant disruption to the Rocky pitcher the Cats again showed their discipline in the box to combine walks with hits to drive in four more runs and even the scores.
With Rocky again held scoreless in the top of the third the Cats regained the lead with a single run in the bottom of the third. More rain through the fourth innings delivered see-sawing fortunes with a HR, two walks and an error handing Rocky Ora three runs but the Cats held scoreless for the first time in the game.
Rocky again came out swinging in the fifth putting on another 5 runs despite Jacob Arto producing one of the catches of the year and nearly delivering a double-play in the ensuing chaos. Needing seven runs to walk it off the Cats were valiant in their attempt falling just short with the tying run at the plate.
A difficult game in wet and slippery conditions but again our defensive effort just not able to back-up the offense.
Rocky Ora winners 14-11.
Div 8 faced Vikings for the second time this season.
Unlike the first game we kept the game tight with great fielding.
Going into the last innings scores were tied at 6 all. Unfortunately, we couldn’t add to our total and Vikings added 3.
Vikings taking the win 9-6, but a much better showing than the last meeting ( 26-5)
🚨BIG NEWS🚨
Div 9 had an enjoyable and heart stopping 25-24 first win at home on Sunday.
It started off with a Cougars player forgetting it is not under 7’s tball and deciding that his hit directly to Max at Centrefield was good enough for a home run and just kept running with us not able catch him out.
Their second batter tried the same but we stopped him at second. With the aid of a couple of strike outs we managed to hold them to 2 runs for the innings
Unfortunately our top order fell like the Australians at Lords and 4 up 3 down with nothing scored. Cougars then managed to score 1 run in the top of the second. With us scoring 8 runs from a number of hits and a couple of errors from then.
The third innings started well for us with 3 up 3 down with Russ only having to pitch 7 pitches including a strike out. Another good batting innings saw us score 11 runs including a over the cones home run from Maxi.
Now at the end of the third the score is therefore 19-3 to us.
In true divi 9 fashion it then fell apart. Cougars managed to score 21 runs in one innings including two over the cones home runs with us making 3 errors and having 3 pitching changes.
Score now 24-19 to them with us to bat. To score 5 to win.
Two lead off bats had walks and managed to advance on wild pitches. Then came a stike out.
A single to centre scored 1, Now 24-20
A infield out to short scored a second on the throw. 24-21 2 out.
Base on balls runners at 1 and 3. Hit by pitch bases loaded.
Error by second basemen allowed a two runs and advanced all batters. 24-23 Runners at second and third. 2 out.
Matt Siford with a walk off single to right field, 2 runners score, CARINE WINS!!!!!!
U14’s
Following last weekends excursion to Ellenbrook (where the junior Cats secured a solid come-from-behind win after 5 innings), the junior’s returned to Birralee today, hosting Rocky Ora Green.
The junior Cats were solid in the field early on, holding RockyOra to only 3 runs in the first, and then backed that up with some solid team batting to put 6 across and end the first innings in front. Rocky Ora managed 5 in the top of the second, before Jordy opened the batting in the bottom of the second timing his swing perfectly to send the ball clear of the cones over Center Field for a home run. The excitement proved a touch much with the others trying to get in on the action – Charlie tried with a great hit that was caught in Left Field and Jesse momentarily forgetting the golden rule of tagging up on fly to get caught running between the bases resulting in a double play, the 1 home run the best the juniors could manage in the second.
The 3rd was 6 apiece. With time ticking down and the cats down by one, the 4th was started before time ran out. The cats started with a quick out before I had to run off to get to my own game. Without a head coach for the balance of the 4th, the cats kept it together in the field to hold RockyOra to just 4, and then kept their heads somewhat level to put another 6 across securing a second come-from-behind win 19-18.
