CATS TAKE ON SINGAPORE NATIONAL TEAM IN SPIRITED INTERNATIONAL MATCH
25 Oct by Trevor Hinchliffe
In a rare and special opportunity, the Carine Cats Division 1 women’s team took to the diamond last night against the touring Singapore Open Women’s National Team, who are in Western Australia as part of their preparations for upcoming Asian regional tournaments.
While the weather did its best to disrupt proceedings, both teams showed determination, sportsmanship, and no shortage of skill in what turned into a memorable night of international softball at Mirrabooka.
Batting first, Carine quickly discovered just how sharp the Singapore side was – with their pitcher’s pinpoint accuracy and the team’s overall speed and discipline setting the tone. Despite a strong line drive to left field from Kayla Gibson, the top of the order – Annaliese Daley, Jess Hobbs, and Courtney Dye – were retired efficiently by the visitors’ impressive defence.
Singapore adjusted quickly to the pace of the local game, scoring three runs in the first and another four in the second, capitalising on errors and wet conditions – including one unfortunate yet entertaining moment for pitcher Courtney Dye, who attempted to field a grounder only to unintentionally execute the splits of the season on a slick rubber mat. Despite wearing half the infield clay on her uniform, she towelled off and returned to action without missing a beat.
Despite trailing, the second half of the game brought some bright moments for the Cats. Strong hits to Daley, Kaitlyn Lethard, and Scarlett Kelly drove in two deserved runs against elite international competition.
Coach Ryan Hoypoy used the back half of the game to rotate the squad and give players exposure against top-tier opposition. Highlights included McKinley Robson stepping into the pitching circle, Kelsie Hinchliffe taking over behind the plate from Caitlyn Power, earning the Whitfords Brewery $50 Community Voucher for her energy and effort, and Lacey Hoypoy having the opportunity to roam and make an impact in the outfield.
The right side of the infield held strong throughout, with Imogen Hoypoy rock solid at first base and Aimee Gibson showing great hustle at second.
Singapore added another eight runs late, bringing the final score to 15-2, but it was the spirit of the match, not the scoreboard, that defined the night.
After the final out, both teams came together for a warm show of sportsmanship. Singapore’s players presented the Cats with handmade mementos, designed by one of their own team members, as a gesture of respect and camaraderie.
Coach Hoypoy summed up the mood perfectly:
“We just played the best players that an entire country has to offer… and we are not quite the best players that our country has to offer. We can be very proud of how we played tonight.”
It was an honour for Carine to host Singapore, and we wish them every success in their upcoming tournaments — they’ve certainly left a lasting impression on our club!
